At the heart of Jerusalem is Johnny "Rooster" Byron, a charismatic and anarchic figure who calls a battered caravan in the woods outside Flintock, a fictional village in Wiltshire, his home. "I was blown away by Jerusalem when I first saw it with Mark Rylance as Rooster," shares director Dermot Hill. "It's not just the outrageous humor and larger-than-life characters that make it memorable; it's the underlying story about England and the world we live in. I wanted to bring this play to Harrogate because it deserves a wider audience and a chance to be experienced live."
The Society's production is an ambitious endeavor, featuring a large cast, intricate set design, and the recreation of Rooster's unique woodland habitat. Members have been rehearsing since the summer, working tirelessly to capture the play's wild and chaotic essence.
First staged at London's Royal Court in 2009, Jerusalem has since become a modern classic, transferring to the West End and Broadway and winning numerous awards. It's also a popular choice for English Literature students, offering a rich exploration of language, mythology, and social change.
